The Lilacs have issued an official statement following the news that guitarist Sam Birchall has sadly been diagnosed with testicular cancer.
The band have therefore understandably postponed their upcoming UK tour while Sam gets the treatment he needs.
The statement from Sam reads: “It’s with sadness that I have to announce this news to you all…after a recent downturn in health & undergoing various tests I have been diagnosed with testicular cancer.
“After starting this band with Ollie all those years ago, and in fact naming the band after ‘The Lilac Centre’ since my mum sadly passed away with cancer, this all seems ironic and a huge shock to myself and us all.
“With this in mind, my personal health and wellbeing must come first and I will be starting my ongoing treatment immediately.”
The band’s new EP, ‘The 395 (To Forever)’ was released on Friday; their biggest project to date and the Wigan band’s first release for Manchester label Scruff of the Neck.
The EP has been produced by Joe Cross (Courteneers), showcasing a step up in production for the new chapter, in contrast to the raw early singles that caught fans’ attention such as “Vicarage Road”.
Frontman, Ollie Angelesea commented: “Countless hours, late nights, and maybe even a few tears have gone into making this record. It’s our first proper release, a completely different experience from putting out standalone singles.
“While those tracks have helped shape our journey, this felt like the right time to take things to the next level. Without a doubt, this is our best work yet.”
You can help support the band’s ambition of making the Official Charts by buying the EP HERE.
It is available on CD, black vinyl and a striking navy blue and white splatter vinyl.
We would like to wish Sam all the best with his treatment and a speedy recovery. We hope to see him back on the stage in the near future!
